About Us
Why the name Driftless Market?
The Driftless Market get the name from the geological make up of southwest and west central Wisconsin also known as the Driftless Area.

Thousands of years ago the Laurentide Ice Sheet covered the northern and Eastern parts of Wisconsin. The driftless area was not covered in the glacier ice so the name implies the lack of snow drifts on the land during the last ice age.
After the ice age the land covered under the Laurentide Ice sheet was pushed down flat. By contrast Much of the Driftless area is a rolling upland plain, with no glacial sediment. The land has been deeply cut by streams into a maze of narrow, twisting ridges and valleys great for farming.
Platteville Wisconsin is located in this driftless area. As much as possible we are committed to buying area and regional foods. Thus we are located in the Driftless area and we are trying to have a majority of our foods also come from the driftless area.
