Vikki Peterson is back in the DM kitchen, and this time not only is she working with Cena, but she is bring her husband John into the kitchen as well. Come and join all three of them as they prepare an Advanced Indian (as in India, not Native American) Meal.

They will be making aloo bonda (potato fritter appetizers), malai kofta (squash  croquettes in tomato curry), masoor dal (red lentil dish), South Indian cabbage, naan, raita, Basmati rice, and Chai. Fun Fact: Chai means tea, so saying chai tea is redundant.

You’re Invited! We hope that you will be able to attend the 2nd Annual Platteville Bicycle Festival on Friday, May 16th beginning at 5pm on Main Street. See complete details below.

Thanks to the creative designs of several local and regional artists and metal workers, Platteville’s Main Street district will welcome 4 additional creative bike racks to the landscape, as well as a Platteville Middle School and High School collaborative bike rack whose future home will be Legion Park.  The creative designs were submitted in response to a competition, which was organized and managed by the Platteville Main Street Sustainability Committee and generously funded by a grant from the Platteville Community Fund, funds from the Platteville Main Street program and the City of Platteville/Safe Routes program.  This is the second year of what is now an annual Bicycle Festival at the end of National Bike to Work Week which supports the communities growing interest in biking, recreational trails and healthy / active lifestyles in our community.

The Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board is hosting their annual grilled cheese competition on April 27th. To stay with this Wisconsin Cheese theme we decided to do a Driftless cooking class inspired by the ultimate comfort food combination, Tomato Soup & Grilled Cheese.

Cena Thorsen, with her right hand woman, Calynn Bennet, will teach how to make home-made tomato basil soup with three different gourmet grilled WI cheese sandwich combinations.

Cost $15.00 per person, registration fee includes a fun dinner party to be shared after the class.

Announcement of Upcoming “Eating Local on a Budget” Workshop

The Driftless Market, Platteville Farmers Market, and Platteville Main Street Sustainability Committee are excited to partner with the Dubuque County ISU Extension to host a spring educational class in order for the community to prepare for spring and seasonal eating!  Regional foods coordinator, Brittany Bethel, will provide suggestions and solutions for eating healthy and locally-sourced food on a budget.   

This workshop will provide an overview of why it’s important to eat local, will reference research done comparing the cost of local vs. non-local foods and will offer practical advice on how to eat nutritious, seasonal, local and affordable meals.

Following the workshop participants will have the opportunity to visit a variety of local foods displays, and sample tasty local foods. Displays include tables by the Driftless Market, Platteville Farmers Market, Platteville Main Street Sustainability Committee / Backyard Composting, and Two Onion Farm will have a display on featuring a local Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). This event will be kicking off the start of the regular Farmers Market season in Platteville, located at the City Park, just off of the historic Main Street district.

Cost for attending the class is a $5.00 donation for the Senior Nutrition/Food Pantry Voucher Program. Class is FREE for students.

UWP Invertabrate Biology Students will be sampling "Bugs" and sharing information about how bugs are an excellent protien source, and quite sustainable. Learn more and try some "Samples". Samples range from Protien bars made with Cricket Flour, to Chili made with Frozen Crickets.

Display will be up in store from 4/7 - 4/12. Students will be in the store and sampling on Sat. 4/12 from 10-3.

Join Mary Ann Shultz and Cena Thorsen for a cooking class focused on Ayurvedic philosophy. Participants will prepare a meal using the “six tastes” that help to balance our whole selves.  Several of the menu basics will be prepared from scratch. We will then share the meal together.

Join Driftless Deli manager Cena Thorsen and guest cook Vikki Peterson for a night of Indian Cooking. Take part in preparing a few simple Indian recipes that will be easy to replicate at home. When the cooking is done, time is built in for the meal to be shared with all participants.

Join us on Saturday, Feb. 15th from 10:30 - 1:30, in welcoming area Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Farmers who have drop off locations at Driftless and around the area. Chris McGuire of Two Onion Farm  will be here, their CSA is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year. We will be using their local carrots for a soup that day. We will have information available from Two Onion Farm, Small Family Farm CSA, Honey Hill Organic Farm & Apiary CSA, Marr’s Valley View Farm Meat CSA, and Kings Hill Farm CSA, .
