Just ONE Backyard: Why Local Food Production is Essential for Sustainability
Saturday, May 23nd: 10am-Noon, Above the Market - Driftless Market, 95 West Main Street
ONE MAN’S SEARCH FOR FOOD SUSTAINABILITY
The Driftless Market is pleased to host Urban agriculture researcher, and Dubuque native, Dr. John Zahina-Ramos (Dr. Z) for his talk about the connection between local food production and sustainability. Dr. Z, the grandson of an immigrant Iowa farmer, found himself living in a large metropolitan area and losing all connection with his food-growing heritage.
After decades of living on commercially produced food, he found inspiration in the memory of his aunt's kitchen garden and began growing fruits and vegetables for himself. His food garden evolved into a research study to measure the environmental, ecological and economic benefits of urban agriculture.
Dr. Z is an avid backyard food grower and founded the Just One Backyard Web Resource (www.justonebackyard.com) to promote the practice of sustainable food growing, particularly in cities. His book, Just One Backyard, is an entertaining tale that skillfully interweaves heartwarming storytelling and scientific facts. His project has been featured on Public Television’s Victory Garden.
Following the presentation Dr. Z will be signing books and available for questions.
