"Empowered Women Grow Communities"

UPAVIM connects Fair Trade, Handmade, Guatemalan Crafts with our local community. Get a taste of the beautiful hand-made goods by browsing the UPAVIM Crafts website!
UPAVIM’s mission: to support the women of La Esperanza in their fight for better economic, healthcare and educational opportunities for themselves, their families and their community.

"We are a group of  75 women who live in the marginalized communities of Búcaro, La Esperanza, El Mezquital and Villa Lobos I and II, in Zone 12 of Villa Nueva. We are all mothers and homemakers. Some of us are widows, some of us have been abandoned by our husbands or we confront alcoholism and/or domestic violence in our families. Many of us are the sole providers of economic support for our families... We developed our handicrafts business, making it our goal to sell to the national and international markets. These early efforts have permitted us to become a self-sustaining Association and to advance toward our dreams.

Special Thanks!

We would like to thank all the friends of UPAVIM around the world who have come into our lives over the years and enabled us to move forward in our vision. We never could have succeeded and achieved what we have without everyone’s support and encouragement. Our hope is that we will continue to have people who understand our dreams for a better life and want to continue on that journey with us."

Curt Meine, featured guest and co-editor of the The Driftless Reader, will read aloud from this newly published, acclaimed anthology. The Driftless Reader collects original source material from early travelers to the Driftless Region. Meine will be around afterwards to sign copies, available through Driftless Market. Check out the The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s stunning review to learn more.

John Peterson, assistant professor of biology at UW-Platteville, isn’t just your average professor. He’ll bring his smooth voice and favorite stringed instrument to the middle act of the evening. His folksy, original music can be found at

Evan Larson, an associate professor of geography at UW-Platteville, will open the evening by reading a selection inspired by his work and passion for local nature. You can read his recent article, What is Wildness, in the Minnesota Conservation Volunteer magazine

This is a free event, open to ages 12+. Driftless will provide hors d'oeuvres and sparkling non-alcoholic drinks. For those interested in continuing socializing after the event, folks can head over to the new 2nd & Main Coffeehouse and Pub just down the street.

November 4, 2017 - 10:00am to 12:00pm

Come stop by Driftless Market and meet Sandra Frye, author of the memoir African Dreams.*

Following a life-long dream to teach and serve others, twenty-three-year-old Sandra Frye served alongside her husband in the Peace Corps in Malawi, East Africa in 1969. They accepted what their Peace Corps director referred to as "the hard luck post," being the only white teachers in a small secondary school on remote Likoma Island. Sandy never let go of her desire to help others, despite battling loneliness, hunger, and lots of snakes. Relying on her passion for teaching and trips off the island to save her, Sandy discovered salvation in the friendship and love of two small Malawian boys.

Sandra's unique and inspiring travel memoir chronicles her time spent nurturing and learning from Goodwin and Hastings. From the first page, you'll be drawn to her story about love, loss, and redemption. The unexpected kinship between people of vastly different ages and cultures lies at the heart of this journey, offering hope that the search for peace is not in vain.
